Introduction

Definition

  • A mantra is a sound vibration “through which we mindfully focus our thoughts, our feelings, and our highest intentions” that can create physical or spiritual transformation. (Girish)
  • It is a “kind of asana for the mind.” (Dr. David Frawley)

ASANA FOR THE MIND

Perhaps the easiest way for us to understand mantra is as a kind of asana for the mind. Mantras provide focus, strength, plasticity and adaptability to the mind, just as asanas do for the body.

More Introductory Information

  • Mantras may be chanted aloud or silently.
  • Mantra Yoga is the repetition of sacred sounds.
  • The practice of chanting mantras may be considered its own branch of yoga (along with Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, etc) or as a practice within other branches.
  • Expert Russill Paul teaches that “mantras are the soul of the yoga tradition” and should accompany posture practice.
